Letter 25
A single thought for the New Year.
I have studied history and political philosophy for most of my life. I have written on the subject both academically and in essay form many, many times.
But this has always been true for me: if you cannot tell me how you will make certain that no one in your society goes hungry, or sleeps in the cold, or is denied the medical care they need and a future for their children, I do not care to hear the rest of your theories and policies. To my mind, your philosophy falls at the first hurdle. It fails at the most basic duties of a society. It is immoral on its face.
I am uninterested in your justifications if your theory says that it is acceptable that anyone lives in dire want. Don't tell me of Liberty or Freedom - no one who is desperately poor is free in any real sense of the word.
