The ἁμαρτάνειν, the tragic harmatia of the human species is that the majority of us prefer comfortable lies to difficult truths. It is from this that all strife, prejudice, waste and wars arise.
Distinguishing Truth from lies is a learned skill, born of much study and discipline. And as with most skills, most people do not learn it well. You will always gain more public approval with a lie that comforts and flatters your audience than you will with an uncomfortable truth, even if that audience knows that you are lying.
It is this trait that is likely to end us long before we reach our potential as a species.
