Letter 30
The whole drag queens reading to kids controversy isn't about what those who would ban such things would like you to think it is.
It has never been about protecting children, of course. The desire to prevent children from seeing queer people isn't about queer people doing queer things, it's about keeping children from seeing queer people happy, doing "normal" and wholesome things.
Fundamentalists do a great deal of indoctrination of children, claiming that anyone who doesn't live as they (claim) to live has a miserable, wretched and dangerous life. Seeing a drag queen do something as wholesome as reading to a group of kids goes directly against the conditioning that the fundamentalists want to inflict on their children. "You can be queer and happy" is an idea they desperately want to suppress.
