There comes a time when you know you have given your best efforts to something, but to continue would require you to compromise why you started in the first place. At that point, it becomes a point of compromise; a temptation to change what you do to reach a larger audience. I’ve reached that point, and I’m not one to pitch my tent toward Sodom.
I’ve always said that this is a hobby, not a side hustle. I’ve never charged anyone for reading here for the same reason I don’t charge my private students - I never want it to be about money. Not that this work was ever in danger of being financially viable relative to the time and effort, but it was never meant to be.
The thing about hobbies is, when they become more work than joy, you should find a different hobby. Those of you who write regularly here know that if you want to do quality work (and yes, I do flatter myself a bit) it requires attention, time, care and research. Since my engagement has fallen so quickly, and my readership has, frankly, plummeted, it takes little perception to realize that doing more and more work to reach fewer and fewer people isn’t a useful proposition.
I’ll leave all this here for now. Not forever, but consider this a parting glass, a gift of tens of thousands of words and many, many hours. A token of my regard for you. That regard has never diminished for those of you who read my work and engaged with it.
To every good thing, an end comes. The important thing is to end well, and on your terms. If you wish to reach me, you can at kit@kitthornton.com.
